In other gospel records, this prophecy is recorded as “before the cock crows thou shalt deny me thrice”. This apparent discrepancy is explained simply by Mark’s account being a more detailed recount of Jesus’ words. There were multiple guard shifts during the night and at the end of each there was a rooster call / cock crow. Indeed, Peter did deny Jesus three times before the second rooster call, which is thought to be the more prominent cock crow and thus referred to as “the” cock crow in the other records.
