Comments on the book of Leviticus

< Leviticus 8 >

The details given here of Aaron’s consecration are significant in that they point forward to various aspects of the work of Christ as High Priest. For example, a bullock and rams were sacrificed to represent the sacrifice of Christ. Here is a vital distinction between Aaron and Jesus. While Aaron as a High Priest sacrificed animals, Jesus as a High Priest sacrificed himself. The apostle furthermore emphasised the superiority of the sacrifice of Jesus over that of bullocks and other animals Hebrews 9:12-14.Waiting for response for Hebrews 9:12-14

Verses 5-9

Aaron did not appoint himself to this position of High Priest but was appointed by God, and the apostle shows that no man can arrogate this position to himself. Even Jesus did not do so but was appointed by God Hebrews 5:4-6Waiting for response for Hebrews 5:4-6

Verse 12

Waiting for response for Leviticus 8:12

Aaron was anointed with oil during his consecration which made him the LORD’s anointed. It is important to notice this because the word “anointed” in the Greek language of the New Testament is “Christ”, the title given to Jesus because he is the LORD’s anointed. However Jesus, being superior to Aaron, was anointed to be, not only a High Priest, but also a Prophet and a King; and he was anointed, not with oil, but with God’s Holy Spirit Acts 10:38Waiting for response for Acts 10:38

Moses took the blood of the bullock and of the rams and sprinkled it upon the altar to intimate that under God’s provisions for salvation men and women can only have their sins remitted and escape from death if blood is shed Hebrews 9:21-22.Waiting for response for Hebrews 9:21-22

Verse 17

The death of the Lord Jesus Christ is also represented by the burning of the body of the bullock outside the camp for Jesus was crucified outside Jerusalem Hebrews 13:11-13.Waiting for response for Hebrews 13:11-13

Verse 23

Waiting for response for Leviticus 8:23

Ram’s blood was placed on Aaron’s right ear, right thumb, and right great toe to show that Jesus would dedicate his whole life to God in saving mankind by the sacrifice of himself. He would listen (ear) to the word of God, do (hand) the work of God, and walk (foot) in the ways of God.
