Lamentations

Lamentations is a book about the lamentings or sadness over the destruction of the city of Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel Lamentations 1:1.Lamentations 1:1XWaiting for response When this book was written Israel had been separated into the ten tribes, known as Israel, and the 2 tribes, known as Judah. The two tribes consisted of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin where Benjamin contained Jerusalem so there are frequent references to Judah throughout, referencing to these two tribes collectively Lamentations 1:3.Lamentations 1:3XWaiting for response There are also references to Zion, a mountain in Jerusalem which references the city of Jerusalem Lamentations 1:4.Lamentations 1:4XWaiting for response

Lamentations chapters 1-4 are set up in an acrostic structure where each verse or sentence starts with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Chapters 1,2 and 4 each have 22 verses that begin with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in chronological order.

Chapter 3 follows a triple-acrostic pattern with 66 verses where each set of 3 consecutive verses begins with the same Hebrew letter before moving to the next letter in the alphabet, in chronological order.

The final chapter has 22 verses but does not follow the alphabetical acrostic pattern.

This could be done purposefully so that the strict order in this book contrasts the chaotic destruction of Jerusalem. It could also be to send the message that the grief of Jerusalem is entire, from “A to Z”.
