The vision that the woman with a familiar spirit sees is likely just made up, just as it happens today by fortune tellers. There are many pieces of evidence for this, that when combined make it clear that God didn’t make her see a vision:
- God dislikes all who practice such as only God knows the future.
- The original word for familiar spirit is translated leather bottle just as fortune tellers use their lungs as if it was a leather bottle to trick people that they are “seeing things”, using voices and making noises to add drama.
- v.12:1 Samuel 28:12XWaiting for response She already would have known it was Saul as he was so distinctive, being head and shoulders above everyone else, even if he did disguise himself.
- v.14:1 Samuel 28:14XWaiting for response Saul couldn’t see or hear Samuel
- v.16:1 Samuel 28:16XWaiting for response Why would God speak to Saul through this medium and not the appropriate means, as he tried earlier? V.61 Samuel 28:6XWaiting for response
- v.s.17-18: While this seems like she knew information she couldn’t have, this would’ve actually been common information - even we know about it.
- v.19:1 Samuel 28:19XWaiting for response She would have known about this if it was a pitched (organised) battle. Saul was on his way and the battle was to be joined the next day with the Israelites being massively outnumbered. Also, she would have disliked Saul to some degree as he had killed all those that practiced the same as her v.31 Samuel 28:3XWaiting for response so she wanted to bring him down.
